CALLING ITALY HOME: Life stationed at Camp Darby, Italy

Colin, Amanda & Bambi - a family reunited

When Colin was first posted to Camp Darby, he made the move on his own. Between VISA’s and COVID, it took a while longer before his soon-to-be wife, Amanda, and their dog could move to Italy too.

Lots of waiting, paperwork and a wedding later- Amanda and Bambi were finally able to join Colin in the land of pizza!

Nothing is easy when moving abroad, and from personal experience, I know that the joke of Italian bureaucracy being a nightmare is no joke! Amanda and Colin learned this too! Bambi’s veterinary and import paperwork was easier to complete than Amanda’s VISA and at one point she had to head back to the States to finish her application process.

Bambi stayed with Colin who introduced a new routine, after-work beach walks! Don’t panic, eventually, the family was reunited but by then Bambi was beach-lovin’ babe!

During their time calling Italy home, Colin continued his work in the windowless room. Amanda on the other hand had pressed pause on her career as her role doesn’t exist in Italy, and instead spent her days exploring the Tuscan countryside with Bambi. After hours, Colin and Bambi’s beach walks continued, now with Amanda by their side, often watching the sun go down from the dunes, or catching a band at the local beach bar.

When we began planning their photoshoot, the location decision barely required a conversation. It was living here opposite the sea that converted Bambi into a beach-bum. It was this stretch of sand that they'd felt under their feet evening after evening. It was these dunes that provided peace and calm at the end of a long day. And so to truly represent their time living here in Italy, it is the beach that needed to be the backdrop of their family portraits.

Their time in Italy may have been temporary, but the memories are forever and through these photographs, they can continue to relive the best moments of calling Italy home.
