A Multi-Generational Family Escape in Chianti, Tuscany

Tuscany family photos at Al Gelso Bianco

There is a certain rhythm to family life in Tuscany that feels instantly grounding. Long meals, open landscapes, the sound of footsteps across stone paths, and the way time slows just enough for everyone to actually be together.

This extended family holiday at Al Gelso Bianco brought all of that into focus. It was the kind of multi-generational travel Italy is made for. Grandparents, siblings, cousins, all sharing a few days that felt both relaxed and meaningful. My role was to document it as it naturally unfolded, creating family portraits that felt like memory, with the formal portraits introduced only once everyone was relaxed.

A truffle hunt through the Tuscan hills

We began with a truffle hunt in the surrounding countryside. It set the tone immediately.

There is something beautifully unguarded about watching a family step into an experience like this together. The children moved ahead with excitement, grandparents followed at an easy pace, and the adults drifted between laughter and curiosity as the truffle dogs worked through the earth.

This is where the story naturally unfolds. Nothing is staged. The connection is already there. I simply follow the light, the movement, and the moments that matter most.

Cooking together in a Tuscan kitchen

After the hunt, we returned to the villa for a cooking class. The energy shifted into something slower and more connected.

Flour on hands, wine glasses left on benches, someone tasting sauce straight from the spoon, laughter spilling between conversations in different corners of the room. These are the details that define multi-gen travel Italy. Not just the activities, but the shared participation in everyday things that suddenly feel special because everyone is together.

This part of the day always produces some of the most meaningful family images. There is no need to direct much. The story tells itself through movement and interaction.

Why a full-day experience changes everything

Many families enquire saying they are looking for a 30 to 60 minute session because the kids will not last long. On the surface, that makes sense. In practice, it often leads to pressure, rushed timing, and everyone trying to perform for the camera.

This approach is different.

Instead of dropping in for a short window, I join you for the experience. More like an extra aunty for the day who is simply there, hanging out, moving in and out of moments, and gently noticing what unfolds. No pressure, no forced smiles, no sense that the day is being interrupted.

What that creates is space for everyone. Children forget the camera is there. Grandparents settle into the pace of the day. Parents are able to actually be in the moment rather than manage it.

And that is when the most natural Tuscany family photos happen.

Rather than adding another scheduled activity, the photography becomes part of the rhythm of the day. Something that moves with you, not around you. The result is extended family images that feel honest, layered, and alive.

Afternoon portraits in golden light

Later in the afternoon, we moved into portraits around the property. The light softened across the hills, and the villa became the perfect backdrop for a series of relaxed groupings.

We created a mix of combinations that matter most to families at this stage of life:

  • Grandparents with grandchildren

  • Siblings together

  • Cousins in their own lively groups

  • The full extended family all in one frame

  • Smaller family units that often get missed in everyday life

These are the images that tend to grow in meaning over time. Not just a record of who was there, but how it felt to be together in that moment.

For families searching for Tuscany family photos, this balance matters. It is not about performance. It is about presence.

Why Chianti works so well for extended family photography

Chianti offers something difficult to replicate elsewhere. Space, light, texture, and a natural sense of privacy. Properties like Al Gelso Bianco allow families to stay together without the distractions of busy towns or crowded landmarks.

For extended family portraits, this environment matters. It gives everyone permission to relax, which is when the most honest images appear.

A day that becomes part of the family story

By the end of the session, nothing felt orchestrated. It simply felt like a day in their holiday that happened to be beautifully documented.

That is always the intention with multi-gen travel Italy sessions. To create images that sit alongside the experience, not separate from it. Photographs that bring people back to the sound of that kitchen, the movement of that truffle hunt, and the feeling of late afternoon light in Tuscany.

These are the moments that last.

Hi, I’m Kirstie

Photographer and Australian expat living her best gelato life

Love of my husband (but mostly of cheese) brought me to Italy in 2020. He was desperate to be back with his Italian family. And honestly, what Aussie girl could pass up the chance to move to the land of pizza and gelato?! (Seeing a food theme here?)

My decade of photography experience was inspired by a trip of a lifetime. My grandparents took me on a trip to Europe when I was a teen, then gifted me an album so I’d never forget it. That album quickly became a staple of family visits and storytime.

When I moved to Italy, I was surprised how rare that type of printed keepsake is for the locals. It’s quite literally a foreign concept - tourists won’t find that type of session here.

It inspired me to recreate an experience for others as deeply meaningful to them as my grandparent’s infamous vacation album has been to me.

So that’s my mission with Classico Portraits: to provide the same timeless centrepieces for families like yours visiting Italy.
