Fun Multi-Gen Family Portraits in Florence, Despite the Summer Heat
Florence in the summer is a dream—golden light reflecting off centuries-old stone, kids enjoying gelato, and the hum of life in the city's piazzas. But, let’s be real, it’s also really hot. Especially in August.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a multi-generational family reunion in Italy. They wanted portraits to capture this once-in-a-lifetime trip, but with the Tuscan sun at full strength, we had to be strategic. That’s where flexibility came into play. My approach is simple: all Classico Portraits photoshoots include unlimited time, so there’s no rush—just fun, memories, and a stress-free experience.
A Calm Start at Boboli Gardens overlooking Florence
We began early at Boboli Gardens, a stunning green oasis behind Palazzo Pitti, once a private retreat for the powerful Medici family. The peaceful surroundings offered the perfect start to the day, allowing us to take our time capturing the family’s natural smiles, with the beautiful Florence skyline behind us.
One of my favorite spots within Boboli Gardens is the Limonaia—a historic structure from the 18th century, originally designed to protect delicate citrus trees during the winter months. Today, it serves as a shaded retreat, offering both comfort and a beautiful backdrop. We took full advantage of the space, allowing the little ones to play, while also capturing some more posed portraits in the cool shade.
A Playful Moment at the Carousel
After a much-needed refreshment in a nearby air-conditioned cafe, we headed to Piazza della Repubblica, home to Florence’s antique carousel. Built in 1913 by the Picci family, this charming ride has delighted visitors for over a century. For the younger members of the family, it was the perfect way to unwind and have a little fun. As the carousel spun and music played, I captured the joy and excitement of the children, with their grandmother cheering them on from the sidelines. These lighthearted, unposed moments are always my favorites, capturing the true spirit of the trip.
A Timely Break to Beat the Heat
As the afternoon sun climbed higher, it was time for a break. The kids (and adults!) were feeling the heat, so we made the wise decision to head back to the family’s villa in the Tuscan hills for a refreshing rest and swim. This break allowed everyone to recharge before we wrapped up the photoshoot later in the day.
Golden Hour at the Tuscan Villa: A Dreamy Finish
As the sun began to set behind the Tuscan hills, we returned to their villa for the final portraits. The golden light filtering through the cypress trees made the entire scene feel like a dream. The family was relaxed by the pool, fully immersed in the moment—no crowds, no pressure—just laughter, love, and genuine connections.
