Villefranche-sur-Mer: The French Riviera’s Best-Kept Secret for Family Vacations

Tucked between Monaco and Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer is a pastel-hued port town that’s often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbours—but as a family photographer in Villefranche-sur-Mer, I can tell you it’s one of the most rewarding spots on the Riviera for portraits, and your vacation!

It’s here, in this pastel-painted port town, that I recently had the joy of photographing a family with their lively four-year-old son.

Their photo session unfolded like a page from a storybook. Walking hand-in-hand along the stone wall by the sea, giggles echoing as little feet balanced and jumped, it was one of those mornings where the location did half the work for me. The sun peaking from behind the soft clouds, the colors of the town promenade danced in the soft light, and all around us, the calm curve of the Mediterranean wrapped the family in something that felt like pure Riviera magic. Even the sudden change in weather and downpour couldn’t stop our fun!

Why Villefranche is a Hidden Gem on the Côte d’Azur

As a family photographer in Nice, I often get asked for recommendations on where to base yourself if you're traveling with little ones. Villefranche-sur-Mer is always near the top of my list—for good reason.

Tucked between Nice and Monaco, Villefranche-sur-Mer is one of the most peaceful pockets on the French Riviera—and an ideal base for families exploring the region. Just a quick train ride from Nice, this family-friendly seaside village offers the charm of a slower pace with all the convenience of being centrally located.

Even if you only plan a day trip to Villefranche, it’s worth it for a taste of that laid-back local rhythm. But if your itinerary allows, consider spending a few nights here. It makes a perfect base for family day trips in the South of France, with the coastal train offering easy access to Nice, Monaco, and even Antibes.

Save at least one full day to simply stay put. Start your morning with coffee at a waterfront café as fishing boats and superyachts drift into the harbor. Wander the Sentier du Littoral, a scenic coastal path that even young kids can enjoy in sections, and then spread out a picnic lunch on the town’s sandy beach. The shallow, calm water makes it easy for little ones to paddle while grownups soak in the view—or finally open that book they’ve been meaning to read.

It’s the kind of place that invites you to exhale. Relaxed, authentic, and full of small moments that make your family’s trip to the French Riviera truly unforgettable.

Good to Know Before You Go

Best Time to Visit The South of France:

Villefranche-sur-Mer and the surrounding French Riviera towns are beautiful year-round. Summer brings that classic Côte d’Azur energy—warm weather, colourful flowers in bloom, vibrant beaches, and bustling village squares. But it’s also the busiest season, so plan early morning strolls through charming villages before the day gets too hot, and slow, scenic evenings along the coast. For fewer crowds and just-as-gorgeous weather, consider late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September–October). Even winter has its charm, offering a peaceful, local vibe and crisp Mediterranean views.

Where to Park in Villefranche-sur-Mer:
Given the size of Villefranche-sur-Mer, street parking is limited and even in slow-season can be tricky. Your best bet is the paid Parking Wilson, which offers the most convenient access to the old town and waterfront.

Local Language Tips in the French Riviera:

Like in neighbouring, Nice, locals in Villefranche-sur-Mer typically speak some English but they’ll appreciate a friendly “bonjour” or “merci” and likely have a giggle with you at your attemps beyond that! This coastal French village is also just a short drive from the Italian border, so don’t be surprised if you hear some Italian!

Things To Do With Kids in Côte d’Azur

I’ve had the chance to explore many corners of the region with families from all over the globe as I photograph them with these magical backdrops of the South of France—and it’s full of easy joys for families.

Here’s how to balance downtime with a little French Riviera sparkle:

1. Explore the charm of the Old Town

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a gorgeous little coastal town just next to Nice. The slower pace makes it a perfect base—but don’t expect to get lost in the Old Town. It’s tiny! You can wander every cobbled lane in under an hour, then settle into the rhythm of local life, watching the kids play in the square with a glass of rosé in hand.

2. Hop on a Train

Villefranche has its own train station, which makes it an ideal base for families. Day trips are a breeze—within 20 minutes, you can be exploring the Provençal market in Antibes, visiting the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, or strolling the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice. And honestly? The train ride itself, with sea views out the window, is part of the fun.

2. Visit a Local Beach Club

Many lidos (private beach clubs) along the coast offer loungers, umbrellas, and shaded restaurants—perfect for families who want a beach day without hauling gear around. Paloma Beach in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is a favourite for its calm waters and incredible views (and yes, the rosé is chilled).

3. Explore the Coastal Path

If you’ve got an adventurous little one, the Sentier du Littoral coastal trail is a great way to stretch your legs. With dramatic sea cliffs, wildflowers, and hidden coves, it’s both scenic and invigorating. Just bring proper shoes and keep kids close—it’s stunning, but rugged in spots.

4. Picnic Like the French

The local markets are bursting with colour—fresh fruit, wedges of cheese, warm baguettes, flaky tarts. Pick up a few things and head to the Citadel gardens or a shady bench by the marina for a relaxed picnic with a million-dollar view.

5. Make Room for Moments

This family reminded me: the best travel memories often happen in the quiet spaces. Holding hands by the harbor. Sharing a laugh as the wind catches your hair. Watching your kids chase pigeons through the square. These small, simple moments? They're the stories you'll tell again and again.

6. Capture the Magic

While you're here, consider updating your family portraits—surrounded by the soft pastels of Villefranche or framed by sparkling sea views. These travel memories deserve to be more than just phone photos. Let’s turn them into heirlooms you’ll treasure long after your suitcases are unpacked.

It’s Not Just a Photoshoot. It’s a Chapter in Your Story.

You won’t remember the name of the gelateria. Or which street led you to the sea.
But you will remember the way your daughter’s curls caught the sun as she ran ahead, barefoot.
The way your partner pulled you close without a word.
The quiet joy of being together—really together—in a place where time slows down.

That’s what we’re capturing.
Not the landmarks. Not the outfits.
The feeling of being exactly where you were meant to be.

So you can relive this trip forever.

If they’re the kind of memories that are important to you, let’s chat.

Final Thoughts: Why I Love This Riviera Hideaway

Villefranche-sur-Mer isn’t flashy or loud like Saint Tropez or even Nice—and that’s what makes it perfect. It’s the kind of place that slows you down, opens you up, and gives families space to just be.

With colorful facades, calm waters, and that easy going French charm, it's a dream for little explorers—and a gift for the grown ups, too.

Whether you’re here for a weekend or a while, don’t skip it. And if you’re hoping to remember this slice of magic for years to come, I’d love to photograph it for you.

Whether you’re staying in Nice, Villefranche, or anywhere along the coast, I travel across the region to create relaxed, meaningful portraits for families like yours.

Because years from now, when your little one has outgrown his sandals and the Riviera feels like a beautiful blur, these photos will bring it all rushing back.
